Administrative Bishop: Derwood L. Perkins, Ph.D.

Dr. Perkins has a rich heritage in the Church of God with both grandfathers being ministers. Born and raised in Lexington, KY, he attended the University of Kentucky for two years majoring in Civil Engineering. He is a graduate of Lee University, Cleveland, TN with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion and a Master of Arts in Christian Ministry/Counseling from the Church of God Pentecostal Theological Seminary, Cleveland, TN. He received his PhD in Organizational Leadership from Piedmont International University, Winston-Salem, NC.

Appointed as Administrative Bishop in 2014, Dr. Perkins comes to the Midlands Region with over thirty-five years of ministry in the local church. The Perkins’ have served as a team as Youth Pastors for over ten years in Natchez, Mississippi and Anderson, South Carolina.  They have pastored churches in Williston, South Carolina; Shreveport, Louisiana; Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Mobile, Alabama.

Dr. Perkins has served on many Church of God state committees in South Carolina, Louisiana, and Alabama. Most recently in Alabama he has served as a member of the State Council, District Overseer, Chairman of the CAMS Committee, a member of the State Ministerial Development Board and State Mentoring Board, facilitator for South Alabama Pastoral Covenant Group, and Chairman of the Cross-Cultural Ministries Board. Dr. Perkins has also served as a District Overseer, MIP Coordinator, Ministerial Development Chairman, Youth Board and State Council member in Louisiana. Currently, he serves as President of Centers of Hope Missions International.

The Perkins have two married daughters, Lauren (Danny) Henderson and Kayla (Robbie) Beck who serve on staff at Stevens Creek Community Church in Augusta, Georgia. They have been blessed with two wonderful grandchildren: Brooklyn Henderson (February 2014),  Andy Beck (November 2015), and Audrey Henderson (January 2017).

Administrative Assistant/ Women’s Discipleship Director: Jean Perkins

Jean was born and raised Calhoun Falls, SC and is a graduate of Lee University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Christian Education and a Minor in Music. She has served in various roles in the church including Children, Music, Youth & Women’s ministry. Jean served as Office Administrator in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Mobile, Alabama. She has served on the State Women’s Board for Alabama and Louisiana.

The Perkins have two married daughters, Lauren (Danny) Henderson and Kayla (Robbie) Beck who serve on staff at Stevens Creek Community Church in Augusta, Georgia. They have been blessed with two wonderful grandchildren: Brooklyn Henderson (February 2014),  Andy Beck (November 2015), and the newest edition, Audrey Henderson (January 2017).

 

Nelson Foster | Youth & Discipleship Director

Bishop Nelson Foster has served as the Youth and Discipleship Director of the Midlands Region since September 2010. He is also Lead Pastor at the Cross Community Church in Des Moines, IA.

Nelson is a third generation Church of God pastor.  He was born in South Carolina but moved to Centerville, Iowa at age 6 where his parents were pastors.  He started preaching at age 15 and received his Exhorters License at that time.  He has served congregations in Illinois and in South Carolina.  In 2005, he and his family moved back to Iowa and in 2006 planted Relevant Church.  In 2013, he became Lead Pastor of the Cross Community Church which was a merger of Relevant Church and Mt. Zion Church of God.  He enjoys watching new believers grow into passionate worshipers and working leaders in the church.

His wife, Rachel (licensed minister), were high school sweethearts and were married in 1995. They have one married daughter, Makenzie (Zach) Butcher who is heavily involved in ministry at their local church, Cross Community. They have a beautiful granddaughter, Chrstiana Andrea Butcher (September 2017).

Rachel Foster | Girls Club Coordinator

Rachel Foster is serving as Girls Ministry Coordinator.  She also works with her husband, Nelson, and the youth board on youth camp and other events in the Midlands Region.  Together she and Nelson have served the region since September 2010.  Rachel is an Ordained Minister in the Church of God.  She has also completed the M.E.T.C. Course through the International Girls Ministry department.  She was privileged to write a book study and project proposals on “Wanting To Be Her” for the Teen Book Club through the International Girls Ministry.  To access book study and project proposals, go to girlsministry.org and click on “Wanting To Be Her” book cover.  It will prompt you to enter assigned password that is provided for you when you order the book from Pathway Press.

Rachel and Nelson have one married daughter, Makenzie (Zach) Butcher, and a beautiful granddaughter, Christiana Andrea born September 2017.
